The Washington Center to Serve as Internship Partner for The Center for Global Understanding
WASHINGTON, D.C., March 28, 2008 – The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is pleased to announce a partnership with The Center for Global Understanding (CFGU) to increase the civic engagement of Muslim American students through its internship program. Our common goal is to cultivate the next generation of Muslim American Leaders. Each semester, CFGU will provide scholarships for Muslim American students that intern at The Washington Center. Scholarship recipients will be chosen through a competitive process administered by CFGU and The Washington Center. This new partnership will provide CFGU students’ opportunities for civic engagement, professional achievement and leadership development. The first group of CFGU students are scheduled to participate in The Washington Center’s Fall term of 2008.
The Center for Global Understanding is a national non-profit organization designed to be a resource for public and private organizations seeking knowledge about Islam and Muslims. It offers an Islamic Expert Scholars program and encourages Muslim American students to participate in civic engagement (visit http://www.cfgu.us).
The Washington Center and The Center for Global Understanding share a commitment to increasing the involvement of college and university students in the institutions and processes of civil society, as well as increasing students’ cross-cultural understanding.
Through the new partnership, CFGU students will be able to take part in programming that will focus on issues of special interest to them as Muslim Americans, as well as benefit from the leadership training provided by The Washington Center through its structured academic internship program.
“The Washington Center is proud to welcome CFGU students to its already diverse population of more than 1500 students annually. The CFGU students will have the opportunity to interact with students from across the country and from around the world. Additionally, the CFGU students will be able to gain an appreciation for the vital role civic engagement plays in our society,” stated Michael B. Smith, president of The Washington Center.
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, non-profit educational organization founded in 1975. Its mission is to prepare college and university students for civic leadership through experiential education. In this way, The Washington Center seeks to promote future leadership for the private, public and nonprofit sectors of society. It has served approximately 40,000 students from close to 1,000 colleges and universities located in the United States and around the world.
