Career and Employer Engagement Specialist

The Career and Employer Engagement Specialist plays a key role in delivering on The Washington Center’s (TWC) promise to provide students with a transformational experience. In this role, the Specialist takes on two interrelated functions: the development and maintenance of supplementary learning programs as well as the design and implementation of programs aimed at introducing students to potential employers and employment opportunities during their time at TWC.

Specifically, the Specialist is charged with providing extended learning opportunities (ELOs) for interns that focus on career development in the Academic Internship Program (AIP). This person will identify learning opportunities and experiences that align with the career readiness curriculum sessions and facilitate the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace. The Advisor will ensure that these ELOs are designed to individualize the student experience based on a student’s level (e.g. seniors, first generation college students) and will ensure a high level of quality and impact throughout each term. Additionally, in collaboration with multiple departments with the organization, the Specialist will design strategy and implement programming aimed at increasing the likelihood of student employment post-TWC.

Key Job Functions 

Student Learning and Student Development

  • Design and implement a requisite number of high impact professional learning opportunities per semester to enhance student career development extended learning opportunities
  • Collaborate with the LEAD instructors and Director of AIP to ensure students are progressing towards the development and understanding of career readiness
  • If and when applicable, collaborate and consult with other TWC staff and departments related to career readiness to ensure alignment for the student experience
  • Be well-versed in all LEAD colloquium modules; attend all LEAD debrief meetings and serve as backup for LEAD instructors as needed.
  • Plan and implement supplemental programming (Jumpstart Programming) for unplaced students or students with delayed starts to their internships – programming consist of coordinating guest speakers, providing additional training, and DC immersion activities 
  • Manage and supervise usage of TWC Career Center including regular upkeep, budget management, resource development, and usage assessment.
  • Develop resources and supplemental materials for the career readiness curriculum with guidance from the Director of AIP

Employer Connections and Career Preparation

  • Develop industry-specific career exploration and/or employment-driven activities including but not limited to career panel discussions, site visits, topical programs, and events granting access to employers and staffing agencies.
  • Collaborate with Office of Internship Site Relations to routinely collect and disseminate to students any employment opportunities relevant to TWC graduating seniors including entry-level positions, short term engagements, and gigs (in the DMV area and nationwide). 
  • Collaborate with Office of Internship Site Relations and Director of AIP to monitor and improve employer and student usage of Portfolium as a potential hiring platform
  • Collaborate with Senior Manager, Alumni Relations to engage alumni offering employment opportunities around the DMV as well as other locations throughout the country. 
  • Conduct regular research on workforce trends across industries and provide regular updates and reports to AIP team members.
  • Grow and maintain online content library of resources related to core development areas for job-seekers, including resume and cover letter creation / editing, networking, job search techniques, graduate school search and application processes, interviewing, and other relevant topics.

ELO Assessment and Evaluation

  • Work with the Director of AIP and with Operational Effectiveness to plan and execute the evaluation and assessment of ELOs. Write annual report summarizing the status of TWC’s ELO initiatives. 
  • Monitor and assess the operations of TWC’s Career Center and write annual report including usage data, budgetary needs, challenges and recommendations.

Required Education and Experience

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Experiential Education, Career Development or related field
  • Ability to conduct training programs/seminars/workshops on relevant career readiness and educational topics.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with college students in career services, career development, or career readiness required.
  • Event planning experience is required.
