Director, Short-Term & Regional Programs

Salary Range: $92,000 - $102,000, Annually

The Director of Short-term & Regional at The Washington Center provides leadership and supervision to the Programs team who manage and facilitate a host of integral TWC short and long-term programs. The Director of Short-term & Regional Programs will leverage a deep understanding of learning, experience design, program management, and workforce readiness to refine, improve, and innovate existing programs. In addition, the Director will collaborate with a cross functional group to design and implement new short-term & regional programs. The Director will guide a team of Program Managers responsible for delivering programs and will oversee programmatic activities, events, and sessions. In addition, the Director will manage and provide regular training and development opportunities for staff and will support staff through their program implementation and management processes. 

The Washington Center is a remote/hybrid organization with the majority of employees working on average one day per week in TWC’s Residential and Academic Facility, conveniently located near Union Station and public transportation in the NoMa neighborhood of Washington, DC. Given our organizational mission focus on skills, workforce development and collaboration, there are times where cross-collaboration among teams and departments will require more than one day per week in the office. The individual in this role is expected to reside in the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area and required to attend programs offered on evenings and weekends. This role will also be expected to travel outside of Washington, DC for Regional Programming. 

Essential Functions

Program Direction and Management

  • Manage the implementation and delivery of short-term program portfolio by ensuring a high-quality participant experience.
  • Direct and supervise Program Managers as they design all program activities, sessions, events, learning opportunities, assignments and other program components. 
  •  Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams—including marketing, recruitment, finance and other participant-facing departments—to plan, coordinate, and deliver short-term and regional programs.
  • Ensure seamless program operations that integrate career and workforce readiness, participant support and community building. 
  • Oversee and manage the delivery of Regional Programs, which includes travel for business development and program delivery. 
  • Partner with the Senior Advisor for Government Relations and Educational Partnerships & Enrollment team to strategize and plan for the expansion of regional programs.
  • Ensure the incorporation of concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as other key organizational values, into program delivery, planning, and execution.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Collaborate with the VP of Programs & Innovation and Senior Manager of Innovation to report on program outcomes in alignment with TWC’s strategic assessments plan. 
  • Utilize all available data to ensure quality delivery of all programs and program components.
  • Make appropriate program revisions based on collected data and best practices. 
  • Continuously evaluate program policies and protocols, and make proper revisions based on best practices and participant feedback.

Staff Management and Development

  • Supervise Assistant Director of Short-term & Regional Programs and Program Managers responsible for delivering and supporting programs.
  • Oversee the training and development of the Programs team members through continuous education, training, and retreats on topics such as: workforce trends and strategies, supporting participants from marginalized backgrounds and advising techniques. 
  • Take on additional duties on behalf of the VP of Programs & Innovation as needed.

Required Education and Experience 

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered:

  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • 5-7 years of experience in working with college students, experiential learning, career development/readiness, workforce development, college-to-career pipelines or other related fields
  • At least 3-5 years of program management and project management experience
  • Experience with managing and leading a high-functioning team required

Preferred Education/Qualifications and Experience

  • Learning Management System experience is preferred
  • Experience working with early career talent, workforce development and/or internship programs is preferred
  • Experience and/or program design is preferred

  • Excellent writing and editing skills required for the preparation of documents and email communications

Supervisory Responsibility

This position directly supervises a team of 7-8 staff members.
