Hello! My name is Abdul Abbas, I’m currently in my third year of schooling at Mount Royal University, which is located in Calgary, Canada. I am pursuing my Bachelors of Business Administration, with a concentration in Financial Analysis and a minor in International Business and Economics. Being the first student from Mount Royal University to be accepted into The Washington Center’s Academic Internship Program, I feel a great deal of responsibility to represent my hometown school.
Being the proud Canadian that I am, I feel an obligation to give back to my community, which is why I’ve been volunteering in Canadian political events since I was 15 years old. The notable experiences being, operating as an under-oath official vote counter for the 2015 Canadian federal elections, event coordinator for MLA candidate Abdou Souraya in the aforementioned federal election, and the marketing coordinator for the current Calgary Ward 10 Alderman.
My internship for the Spring 2019 semester is with the Turkish Heritage Organization (THO), which lobbies for stronger U.S and Turkish bilateral relations. They operate on a variety of platforms, from reporting on large-scale political relations to hosting think-tank events around the D.C. area.
Furthermore, I am the director of operations of the Ahmed Abbas Foundation, which is an organization that strives to serve disadvantaged children in the Alberta area. With the endorsement of the Mayor and attention of the Prime Minister, we host bi-annual weekend camps, fundraisers, and clothes drives for asylum seeking refugees. As we approach our 10th anniversary, we have hosted a total of 16 weekend camps and nearly 2400 participants since 2009.
To conclude, I am a dedicated student of finance, a vehicle for positive change and undoubtedly Canadian.
Thank You for taking the time to read my biography,
Abdul Abbas
