The Washington Center has a rich history of helping interns to gain valuable experience while setting them on a course of achievement, leadership, and engagement in their communities. The Alumni Mentorship program reflects the belief that Alumni who have continued these pursuits can deeply enhance the intern experience. Using targeted training focused on mentorship theory, practice, and outcomes, the program seeks to provide Alumni the opportunity to become thoughtful and effective mentors for participants while growing personally and professionally in this unique capacity with The Washington Center.
- Develop and maintain relationships with intern population that create a safe and supportive environment through the following methods:
- Orientation support
- 1 on 1 engagement
- Group mentoring sessions
- Project based mentoring opportunities
- Schoology engagement campaign
- Foster intern development through events aligned with the mission and goals of The Washington Center, Office of Student Services and Community Life, Internship Bill of Rights, and as outlined in the AM expectations agreement. This includes crafting unique, professional level events, participating in the large-scale events hosted by the Office of Student Services & Community Life, and creating small-scale floor programming for community development.
- Serve as a resource for the resident TWC experience including knowledge of internal resources such as programs, staffing, and various policies, and procedures. Also serve as a resource on external resources such as personal network, networking events, DC culture and food scene, etc. Use resources to engage residents in upholding expectations and guidelines, as outlined in the TWC Code of Conduct as well as meeting goals of maximizing experience in accordance with the TWC Intern Bill of Rights and expressed career development goals.
- Support and serve as first level-responder in TWC’s residential communities as part of an on-call rotation. Provide follow-up on interns of concern and front-line response for active conflicts as needed. Document any incidents/policy violations and on-call activities using TWC’s reporting systems.
- Other duties as assigned to include a collateral assignment based on skill set and preference in the area of SSCL support, DC Centric large scale programming, Communit Partnership Development, or other defined areas.
- Complete administrative responsibilities including but not limited to trainings, development opportunities, and bi-weekly meetings. Complete administrative reporting, special assignments, and team focused responsibilities as well as providing prompt response to inquiries from interns, staff, faculty, and other key TWC stakeholders with accuracy and efficiency.
- Successful completion of a Washington Center internship program (Please note, persons having only completed the seminar program should demonstrate an internship experience in their application materials.)
- Must demonstrate familiarity with TWC programs as well as the greater Washington metro area.
- Minimum 1 year of post baccalaureate professional work experience (Applicants with at least 1 year of completed post-graduate study will also be considered.)
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement experiences to meet specific established goals.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly evaluate situations and respond appropriately
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Experience engaging with college students in a higher education setting
- Demonstrated facility with online communication tools and social media; particular consideration for such with academic/community life platforms such as Schoology or Blackboard
- Event planning/management experience
- Crisis management experience
Additional Terms and Conditions
This is a contracted position for which TWC offers housing within the living communities as compensation (please note that room types vary). A prerequisite for the Alumni Mentor position is successful completion of training including, but not limited to, TWC’s guidelines and Code of Conduct as well as a thorough criminal background check completion with satisfactory result. Given the purpose of this role and the training provided for it, we ask that AM’s make a commitment for the entirety of their designated term (Yearlong term: 15 weeks in fall, 15 weeks in spring and 10 weeks in summer, plus additional weeks for training. Summer term: 10 weeks in summer plus additional weeks for training.) and expect to be engaged in at least 15-20 hours/week for the responsibilities described above. Despite term appointment, AM’s are welcome to express on-going interest beyond the minimum commitment and consideration will be made based on enrollment and performance observations.
