The Career Advisor is a key role ensuring The Washington Center’s mission to provide transformational experiential programs to college students looking to launch their careers. In this role, the Career Advisors work directly with students participating in either virtual or in-person internships. Specifically, Career Advisors guide and support student development, assist students in exploring unique career and post-college opportunities, engage their students with reflective assignments, deliver targeted career readiness sessions, and play a vital role in the career launch of their students.
Note: due to COVID-19 all TWC programs and student engagements will be virtual during the Summer 2021 semester. In-person programs, advising and lessons might be partially restored during the Fall 2021semester depending on overall safety and DC government guidelines.
This position is remote through the Fall semester but will need to be in the Washington, D.C. Metro area starting Spring 2022.
Key Job Responsibilities
Virtual Student Instruction
- Create, deliver, and assess multiple virtual career readiness workshops correlating with overarching program goals.
- Design and implement virtual learning activities and lesson plans that increase active engagement among students, encourage critical thinking and small group discussion, and take into consideration different learning styles and backgrounds.
- When applicable, assess workshop quality based on attendance, student satisfaction, and other key metrics.
- Continuously revise and improve career readiness workshops based on available data, student feedback, and virtual education best practices.
- Deliver virtual orientation program preparing students for The Washington Center semester.
- Support and monitor the experience of 40-60 students per semester through continuous outreach, communication, and mentorship.
- Monitor the student-supervisor relationship and ensure student growth, professional development, and overall satisfaction.
- When applicable, serve as a liaison between the student and the internship supervisor for problems that may occur.
- Advise and support students when issues arise that impact their TWC experience.
- Conduct individual or group virtual career advising with students throughout the semester based on student need. Emphasize strong, lasting relationship building with students.
- Guide and advise students during the program, outlining and monitoring learning goals, establishing action steps, and documenting overall progress throughout the semester.
- Conduct optional weekly touch points with students that clarifies program expectations and encourage peer to peer interactions.
- Fully utilize technology platforms being utilized by TWC as to maximize student support, data collection, and communication efficiency.
- Provide the Director of Academic Internship Programs (AIP) with updates and briefings on all student issues and needs.
- When necessary, collaborate with other departments within TWC (Student Services and Community Life, Finance, Office of Pre-Arrival and Employer Relations, and others) to manage student issues, support students in need, craft reports for external audiences, and mitigate conflicts that might arise.
Required Education and Experience
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- Master’s degree in Experiential Education, International Education, Academic Advisement, or other related degrees
- One to three years of work experience.
- Experience in leading professional exploration and development in a variety of fields.
- Strong ability to advise students regarding their career and professional goals (virtually).
- Experience instructing students online or conduct training programs/seminars/workshops on relevant educational topics required.
Preferred Education/Qualifications and Experience
- Experience in working with college students in advising, mentoring, teaching or supervision capacities within specific area desired
- Knowledge of best practices in online education
- Experience in leading professional exploration and development in a variety of fields
- Knowledge regarding career development and coaching are desired.
